‘The Heath Room’ Weversteeg Otterlo

The site used to be the village of Otterlo’s sports venue. A few years ago, this facility disappeared and the sturdy green surroundings with several large oaks remained. They now form a beautiful woodland chamber against the woods and heathland of the Veluwe. The screen of planting forms a strong spatial framework within which the new development can be absorbed relatively easily. It forms a robust structure that can absorb new development and provide a nice basis for a biodiverse and nature-inclusive development.

The surrounding Veluwe has been drawn over the project area like a blanket. The basis is formed by applying heather vegetation, the DNA of the area. Different species are applied to create a varied image. Differences in relief, partly slight undulations and some depressions reinforce this image. The depressions also serve to collect rainwater (wadi). As a result, the vegetation will have a different composition, reinforcing the biodiversity of the heath landscape. The paths are designed as meandering ‘sand paths’, as you would expect on the Veluwe. Their location is based on logical walking lines; residents simply take the easiest route. The materialisation consists mainly of semi-paved paths; along the access road, they are clinkers.

The trees in the heath landscape match the atmosphere of the surrounding forests: consist of birch, oak and pine. Addition of additional tree species on more private plots will enhance biodiversity and contribute to the seasonal experience. The gardens will all be bordered with hedges, as will the property fences between the plots. The future residents can use only shrubs made available by the developer to fill in their plots.
