The International Horticultural Exhibition EXPO 2023 Doha Qatar

On behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, our office made the concept design for ‘The Netherlands Garden’ in the International Horticultural Exhibition EXPO 2023 Doha in Qatar. The general theme of this Expo is ‘Green Desert, Better Environment’. The theme that draws attention to the increasing desertification of the world. Within this theme, the Netherlands proudly presents its pavilion: the Oasis.

Our entry shows a large desert garden within the center the ‘Oasis’ inspired by the work of the world-famous Dutch artist Piet Mondriaan and the movement of ‘De Stijl’. This inspiration led to an interplay of colorful geometry and nature.

Within this architectural work of art, we unveil innovative solutions for water use, especially in areas where desertification is an increasing challenge. The ‘Oasis’ limits water consumption to a minimum and uses smart natural cooling instead of air conditioning by also taking the wind direction into account during construction. By using natural processes in designs sustainable solutions can be created.

In ‘Oasis’, you can find the “water maker” Sunglacier Droppler®️, which is able to extract water from wind through condensation, and the Waterboxx, which makes it possible to grow trees in the desert with 90% less water consumption. Together with Grodan’s expertise and innovation, which makes it possible to grow crops in extremely dry environments without fertile soil, you will see the Fog Catcher, which also manages to capture water from the air through the smart arrangement of fine-mesh nets. A design by Delft University of Technology. Companies and universities all contribute to smart solutions for the world.

Our NL Garden is experimenting with summer flowering bulbs from the Netherlands and combines local flora with Dutch expertise, showing how biodiversity and sustainable horticulture are valuable against desertification and creating a better living environment for both city dwellers, but also for farmers, and the local flora and fauna.

With Dutch flower bulbs that extend the flowering time and a microclimate that is conductive to people and nature, we are committed to a better future. In the pavilion and garden Dutch technology and innovation come together in a harmony of art, nature, and sustainability. The Expo is open from 2 October 2023 to 28 March 2024.
