The entry for The Netherlands was based on The Green City philosophy. This was not only on display at the indoor exhibitions but also could be seen in the design and building materials chosen for the pavilion itself. The green walls were planted with ivy because the local alternative, bamboo or Pyrostegia venusta, could not be guaranteed during the typhoon season in July and August. The exhibition would not have been complete without the large poster with windmill and tulip fields which was stretched between the two towers on the front of the pavilion. The Office of Niek Roozen won the ‘Gold Medal of the Global Garden Area’with their design. Niek gave a number of lectures about the Green City during the Expo.
